If you are reading this information, you are most likely facing the inspection and/or replacement of the oil spray nozzle as outlined in a ROTAX® Service Bulletin SB-912 i-016iS.
Note: Replace the nozzle. Approximately 98% of the cost will be labor to comply with this service bulletin, as the cost of the new spray nozzle itself is minimal.
This service bulletin is NOT for the faint of heart when working on a Van’s RV-12. The RV-12 has little to no room between the firewall and the stator housing. This means the entire engine must be removed from the aircraft. Additionally, the stator housing, water pump, and sprag clutch must also be removed to access the nozzle.
I am an A&P/IA and iRMT-certified mechanic who has completed this procedure several times on the RV-12. I can assure you, it is not a fun job—especially if you lack the proper Rotax tools and custom jigs to remove and stabilize the engine while performing this delicate operation.
I run a nonprofit organization called Eagle’s Nest Project Wisconsin, which is 100% funded by donations. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of aviators through STEM-based aviation projects.
With decades of experience as an A&P/IA and iRMT mechanic, I have primarily worked on Rotax engines. I have built five Van’s RV-12 aircraft and am intimately familiar with both the RV-12 and the Rotax engine.
My Offer to the RV-12 Community (and Other Rotax Owners): I am offering my services to repair your aircraft.
Labor:
- Engine Removal and Reinstallation: This is a 16-hour job for the RV-12.
- Rotax Estimate for Nozzle Replacement: Rotax estimates 8.5 hours to remove the stator housing, sprag clutch, and install the spray nozzle.
The Fix:
I am offering my services to the RV-12 community (and other Rotax owners) to repair their aircraft in exchange for a donation to Eagle’s Nest Project Wisconsin. The donation will cover the cost of parts and labor. My rates are reasonable, and all proceeds will directly support youth aviation programs.
